Beaten to Death in a Cell: Woman Dies After Night in Police Custody
A family in Nanyuki is grieving the loss of their loved one, Julie Njoki, who allegedly died after being assaulted while in police custody.
Julie was arrested on Monday, July 7, during the Saba Saba protests and held at Nanyuki Police Station. Her aunt has now come forward with heartbreaking claims, stating that Julie was beaten unconscious by officers while in custody.
“Julie was arrested in Nanyukiโa town I once believed to be peaceful,” her aunt wrote in a deeply emotional statement. “She was taken to court the next day, and that same night, while still under police care, she was brutally attacked and left unconscious.”
The family says Julie was later taken to hospital, where doctors confirmed she had suffered serious head injuries caused by blunt forceโinjuries consistent with a violent beating.
According to the family, police officers delayed her medical care and tried to cover up how badly she had been hurt.
โHer condition was serious, but it was met with silence and slow response,โ her aunt added. โBy the time she got proper help, it was too late. Julie died. She didnโt deserve this. No one does.โ

Now, the family is demanding answers from the police. They say the justice system has failed the people it is supposed to protect.
โIโm heartbroken and angry,โ her aunt said. โHow do you arrest a young person on Monday and by Wednesday, theyโre dead? How can we trust a system that keeps taking our children away?โ
Julieโs death comes just days after another tragedyโthe death of teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang, who also died while in police custody in Nairobi.
Outrage is growing across the country, with many Kenyans, including political leaders and human rights activists, speaking out online against rising cases of police brutality. Young lives are being lost, and families are left with pain and questions.
As Kenyans demand answers and accountability, all eyes are now on the police force. So far, authorities have not released any statement on Julie Njokiโs death, and her family continues to wait for justice.
