Ugandaโs President Yoweri Museveni and First Lady Janet Museveni have publicly apologized for the mistakes made during their nearly four decades in power.

The Musevenis expressed deep regret and asked for forgiveness, especially from the people of Buganda and Ugandans across the country.

โWe take full responsibility for the wrongs done by us and our representatives. We stand before you today to sincerely ask for your forgiveness,โ they said.
The couple called for peace, healing, and a renewed sense of national unity, asking both Ugandans and God for a chance to start fresh.
โMay God restore the trust we once shared. Heal the wounds, soften hardened hearts, and bring us back to the original dream of a united and transformed Uganda,โ they prayed.
A Look Back at Museveniโs Rise to Power
After the fall of Idi Amin in 1979, Museveni served briefly in Ugandaโs transitional governments. But after the disputed 1980 elections, he lost faith in the political system.
This led him to form the National Resistance Movement (NRM) and its military arm, the National Resistance Army (NRA). A bloody guerrilla war followed against then-president Milton Obote, known as the Ugandan Bush War.
In 1986, the NRA captured Kampala, and Museveni became president.
Museveniโs Legacy: From Reform to Criticism
At first, Museveni was praised for bringing stability to Uganda, a country that had suffered years of coups and brutal regimes. His early efforts in improving healthcare and education led to better public health and rising literacy rates.
But in recent years, critics say Museveni has grown increasingly authoritarian. Accusations include silencing political opposition, rigging elections, and changing the constitution to stay in power by removing presidential term and age limits.
