Mob Fury in Kirinyaga: Villagers Chase Nyumba Kumi Elders After Man Is Beaten to Death Over Grass Slasher

Tension and anger have gripped Gathigiriri village in Kirinyaga County after a middle-aged man, known locally as Msanii, died under unclear circumstances. Villagers claim that Msanii was brutally beaten by Nyumba Kumi elders, who accused him of stealing a grass slasher worth only Ksh. 100.

According to eyewitnesses, the elders accused the man of theft and took matters into their own hands instead of reporting the issue to the authorities. Peter Kinyua, a long-time resident of the area, saidย Msaniiย was tied with a local chain and assaulted by the elders as a form of punishment.

โ€œHe was not given a chance to explain himself. They just accused him of stealing and started beating him without mercy,โ€ said Kinyua. โ€œThis kind of injustice should not be allowed in our village.โ€

The incident sparked outrage among villagers, leading to a protest that saw the elders chased out of the village. Residents were visibly angry and demanded answers from both local leaders and security officials. They claim the elders have been misusing their position by punishing residents unlawfully.

Lucy Wambui, another resident, questioned why the Nyumba Kumi elders had been given the power to punish people in the first place.

โ€œWe donโ€™t want any village elder in Gathigiriri anymore,โ€ Wambui stated angrily. โ€œWe are shocked that the Mwea-East sub-county security team has allowed these elders to act like police officers. One of them even handcuffed Msanii using a homemade metal chain. Is that how justice is delivered?โ€

Many villagers joined Lucy in condemning the actions of the Nyumba Kumi group, describing them as abusive and dangerous. Some said this is not the first time they have used their position to harass or intimidate residents.

Another disturbing allegation is that the same elders recently forced a young man to leave the village due to a suspected love affair with a woman linked to one of the elders. This, according to residents, is further proof that the elders have been overstepping their roles and using their authority for personal gain.

As the village mourns the death of Msanii, the call for justice is growing louder. Residents have vowed to continue protesting until those responsible are arrested and charged in a court of law.

In response to the incident, Mwea-East Sub-county Police Commander Mohammed Jarso said an investigation has been launched. He confirmed that the police are awaiting a postmortem report to determine the actual cause of Msanii‘s death.

โ€œWe have requested the Nyumba Kumi elders involved to come forward and record statements,โ€ said Commander Jarso. โ€œWhile investigations continue, we urge residents not to take the law into their own hands. Let us allow due process to take its course.โ€

Despite the police intervention, many residents say they have lost trust in the local security team, accusing them of turning a blind eye to the growing power of the Nyumba Kumi group. They are now demanding that county and national leaders intervene to restore law and order in Gathigiriri.

This incident has raised serious questions about the role of Nyumba Kumi elders in local communities. While the initiative was introduced to help improve security and community policing, residents of Gathigiriri say it has become a tool for abuse and personal revenge.

As Msaniiโ€™s family waits for the results of the autopsy, they say they want justice served. โ€œOur brother did not deserve to die like this,โ€ said a family member. โ€œHe was not a criminal. He deserved to be heard, not punished like an animal.โ€

Gathigiriri now stands as a village in mourning, united by grief but determined to hold those responsible accountable. The residents continue to call on the government and human rights bodies to intervene and ensure justice forย Msanii.
