Hanna Cheptumo Says Her Family Is Worth Ksh.420 Million During Cabinet Vetting
NAIROBI, Kenya โ April 14, 2025
Hanna Cheptumo, the nominee for Gender Cabinet Secretary, has revealed that her familyโs wealth is estimated at Ksh.420 million.
Speaking to Members of Parliament on Monday during her vetting at Parliament buildings in Nairobi, Cheptumo said the wealth includes real estate and other properties.
โOur family net worth is about Ksh.420,049,000. We own a house in Karen worth Ksh.100 million and another house in Nakuru valued at Ksh.15 million. There are many more assets,โ she said.
Widow of Late Senator William Cheptumo
Hanna is the widow of former Baringo Senator William Cheptumo, who died in February 2025 after an illness.
She explained to MPs that she hasnโt officially inherited her husbandโs wealth yet, saying:
โI donโt have money of my own. The money belongs to my late husband, and we have not yet completed the succession process.โ
Cheptumo also claimed that some of her husbandโs money has already been stolen. She said during his funeral, she was told that Ksh.250,000 had been borrowed from his cooperative account, even though he had already passed away.
โI was shocked to hear that he borrowed Ksh.250,000 while he was lying in state. That money is already gone,โ she added.
Advocate for Womenโs Rights
Cheptumo is a lawyer and a strong supporter of womenโs rights, legal empowerment, and social justice. She was nominated by President William Ruto in March 2025 to head the Gender Ministry.
This position has remained vacant since August 2024, when Parliament rejected Stella Soi Langโat for the same role. The ministry was originally led by Aisha Jumwa, but she was removed during a Cabinet reshuffle in July 2024, following weeks of anti-government protests.
