Kenya: Rape Suspect Caught Stealing Prosecutor’s Phone at Kibera Court

A man accused of rape made his legal troubles worse after he was caught stealing the phone of the prosecutor handling his case at Kibera Law Court.

The bizarre incident happened on Wednesday, April 2, when the suspect, accompanied by his father, visited the court to get the hearing date for his rape case.

While the prosecutor stepped out of the room, he left his phone on a desk. The suspect allegedly took the phone but later denied stealing it, claiming he had merely “collected” it.

“I did not steal the phone. I just collected it. It was on the desk. A paper caught my attention, and when I opened it, I found the phone and picked it up,” the man said in his defense.

When the prosecutor returned, he realized his phone was missing. A search was conducted, and CCTV footage showed the suspect taking the phone and quietly leaving the court premises.

Police and court officers tracked down the man and arrested him. Investigations led them to a woman in Kawangware suspected of being his accomplice and in possession of the stolen phone.

Following the arrest, the suspectโ€™s father pleaded for leniency, promising to help recover the phone.

“I hope the phone is found. My son should talk to this lady and return it. If possible, I will personally take it to the police,” he assured the authorities.

The father also expressed fear over his son facing two serious charges, admitting he was uncertain about the courtโ€™s decision.

In Kenya, rape carries a minimum sentence of ten years, which can extend to life imprisonment. Meanwhile, phone theft is punishable by up to three years in jail.

The suspect and his alleged accomplice are currently in police custody. He is set to appear in court again on Thursday, April 3, to face new charges for phone theft.
