Niger’s Coup Leader Sworn in as President for Five-Year Transition

Gen Abdourahamane Tchiani has officially become Niger’s president for a transitional period of five years. He has led the country since 2023, after removing elected President Mohamed Bazoum from power.

On Wednesday, Gen Tchiani took the presidential oath under a new charter that replaces Niger’s constitution. Along with his new role, he was promoted to the highest military rank of army general. He also signed a decree to dissolve all political parties.

    Gen Tchiani’s Promise as Leader

During a ceremony in Niamey, the capital, Gen Tchiani said, “I receive this distinction with great humility… I will strive to live up to the trust placed in me.”

The transition to democratic rule follows recommendations from a national commission. The new charter states that the five-year transition period is “flexible” based on the country’s security situation.

    Security and Political Changes

Niger has faced jihadist attacks for years. The military cited this ongoing security crisis as one reason for the coup. The country is part of a regional trendโ€”neighboring Mali, Guinea, and Burkina Faso are also ruled by military juntas.

All four nations have cut ties with France, their former colonial ruler, and built new alliances with Russia. Except for Guinea, they have also left Ecowas, the West African regional bloc.

Nigerโ€™s relationship with Ecowas worsened after the junta initially proposed a three-year transition to democracy. Ecowas called the plan a “provocation” and threatened military intervention but later backed down.

Legal Action Against Former President Bazoum

Gen Tchianiโ€™s administration is prosecuting Mohamed Bazoum for high treason and threatening national security. He remains detained in the presidential palace with his wife, while his son was released on bail in January.

According to Niger’s state-run news agency ANP, Gen Tchiani emphasized that the new charter protects the country’s natural resources. He stated that Nigeriens must benefit from their nationโ€™s wealth.

    Conclusion

Gen Tchianiโ€™s leadership marks a significant shift for Niger. As the country navigates its political transition, many will be watching how the military government handles security, democracy, and foreign relations.
