Gabon Court Approves 8 Candidates for Presidential Election, Including Coup Leader Nguema

Libreville, Gabon โ€“ Gabon’s Constitutional Court has approved eight candidates to run in the upcoming presidential election on April 12, 2025. Among them is interim President Brice Oligui Nguema, who took power in a military coup in 2023.

Nguema Allowed to Run Despite Transition Rules

Normally, transitional leaders are not allowed to run for election. However, in November 2024, Gabon passed a new constitution that made an exception for Nguema. This decision has sparked concerns from opposition leaders and political analysts, who fear the military wants to stay in power.

The military government had earlier promised that the constitutional referendum was a step toward democracy.

Nguemaโ€™s Key Rival: Ex-PM Alain Claude Billie By Nze

Nguema, 50, led the coup that ended the long rule of Ali Bongo and his family. The Bongo family controlled the oil-rich but poor country for decades.

His main rival in the election is Alain Claude Billie By Nze, 57, the last prime minister under Bongo. He is running as an independent candidate.

    Other Presidential Candidates

    The Constitutional Court also approved:

    • Stephane Germain Iloko Boussengui โ€“ A former member of Bongoโ€™s Gabonese Democratic Party, now leading his own movement, the “Large Rainbow Gathering”.
    • Joseph Lapensee Essigone โ€“ A tax inspector.
    • Gninga Chaning Zenaba โ€“ A businesswoman and the only female candidate.

    Election Set for April 12

Gabonโ€™s presidential election will take place on April 12, 2025. Many voters and international observers will be watching to see if the country moves toward true democracy or if the military will keep its grip on power.
