Mother from Hell? Woman Kills Baby in Cold Blood After Marital Clash

A Baringo court has ordered that Viola Kangogo, 28, be detained pending a second mental assessment. Kangogo is accused of killing her infant on March 4 at around 8 p.m. at their home in Turukwei village, Baringo Central subcounty.

    Court Orders Second Mental Evaluation

Kabarnet Principal Magistrate Purity Koskey ruled that Kangogo be held at Eldoret Women GK Prison while awaiting a second mental evaluation. This decision follows a report by psychiatrist Dr. Stanley Kilelit, who found her to be of unsound mind when she first appeared in court. However, the report did not clearly state what mental condition she is suffering from, prompting the need for a second assessment.

    Infanticide Charges Awaiting Confirmation

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) is seeking to charge Kangogo with infanticide under Section 210, as read with Section 205 of the Penal Code. The charge will be determined once the second mental assessment is complete.

    Husband Recounts Tragic Incident

Kangogoโ€™s husband, Ronald Yator, told police they had been living peacefully as a family until the tragic day. He said the trouble began on March 3 when Kangogo accused him of having extra-marital affairs, leading to a heated argument.

According to Yator, his wife became agitated and threatened to kill either him or their child. That night, she allegedly attempted to strangle the baby with a scarf, but Yator intervened and saved the child. However, the following day, at around 8 p.m., Kangogo allegedly returned home drunk. When Yator asked her to breastfeed the baby, she picked up the child and smashed the infantโ€™s head against a stone, killing the baby instantly.

After realizing what she had done, Kangogo reportedly tried to take her own life, but Yator restrained her. The case is set for mention on April 4.

    Whatโ€™s Next?

The courtโ€™s decision on her mental health will determine the next legal steps. If found to be of sound mind, Kangogo will face trial for infanticide. If she is deemed mentally unfit, the court may order medical treatment instead of a trial.

Stay tuned for updates on this developing case.
