Museveni Boasts About Never Being Hospitalized in 38 Years – Calls Hospitals ‘Garages for Damaged Vehicles’

Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni met journalists from the Bunyoro sub-region on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, at State Lodge in Masindi. He discussed key issues such as healthcare, poverty reduction, land evictions, and economic transformation.

Museveni’s Tour on Parish Development Model (PDM)

The meeting was part of the President’s three-day countrywide tour to assess the performance of the Parish Development Model (PDM) in Bunyoro. The tour began on Tuesday, March 18, 2025.

    Focus on Primary Healthcare

President Museveni emphasized the government’s commitment to primary healthcare and disease prevention. He highlighted the importance of immunization, clean water, malaria control, and hygiene.

“We focus on prevention. Have you ever heard that I have been admitted to the hospital in my 38 years as President? Hospitals are like garages for damaged vehicles,” Museveni said.

He noted that 80% of illnesses can be prevented with good hygiene, proper nutrition, and immunization. He recalled how he and his comrades avoided sickness during their bush war years by drinking boiled water and using mosquito nets.

    Economic Transformation Through PDM

Museveni stressed that the Parish Development Model (PDM) is crucial for Uganda’s economic growth.

“The government sends UGX 100 million per year to parish SACCOs. Of this, **30% goes to women, 30% to youth, 10% to persons with disabilities, 10% to the elderly, and 10% to men,” he explained.

He encouraged journalists to promote family-based economic transformation. He shared how education transformed his own family from cattle keepers to a modern, self-sufficient household.

    Land Evictions and Law Enforcement

The President warned against illegal land evictions and reassured citizens that the government would protect them.

“Even if a landlord sells land, tenants have a right to stay. We will not allow illegal evictions,” he said.

He also addressed cattle theft and directed law enforcement to take a tougher stance.

“There should be no police bond for cattle thieves. I am discussing with the Chief Justice to ensure they don’t get bail.”

    Cultural Institutions and Economic Growth

Museveni dismissed claims that kingdoms affect economic growth.

“Kingdoms are about culture, not politics. Look at Ankole—we have no kingdom, yet Banyankole people are doing well. Poverty is in homes, not kingdoms.”

    Government Spending and Future Plans

The President called for reduced government spending and halted the creation of new districts.

“Some people wanted to split Ntungamo into three districts, but too many administrative units slow development. Instead, we should increase PDM funds.”

    Addressing Swine Flu in Uganda

Museveni promised to consult veterinary experts about a vaccine for swine flu, which has affected pig farmers.

“If pigs are dying and the government has not controlled it, then the poor should not be blamed. We will handle it.”

    Key Leaders in Attendance

The meeting was attended by top officials, including:

    • Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja
    • Minister of ICT and National Guidance Dr. Chris Baryomunsi
    • Minister of State for Youth and Children Affairs Hon. Balaam Barugahara
    • State House Comptroller Ms. Jane Barekye

    Conclusion

President Museveni’s meeting with Bunyoro journalists highlighted his administration’s efforts to improve healthcare, economic development, land rights, and law enforcement. His commitment to the Parish Development Model aims to uplift Ugandans by supporting local businesses and preventing poverty.
