EX-CS Susan Nakhumicha Lands New Government Job Weeks After Plea to Ruto

Former Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha has secured a new role in President William Ruto’s administration, nine months after being removed from the Cabinet.

    Nakhumichaโ€™s New Position

On Thursday, State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed announced that President Ruto had nominated Nakhumicha as Kenya’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Habitat in Nairobi.

She was among several individuals appointed to key foreign positions. Others include:

    • James Buyekane Muhati โ€“ Consul-General in Guangzhou, China
    • Abdi Dubat Fidhow โ€“ Consul-General in Arusha, Tanzania
    • Peter Tum โ€“ Kenyan Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)
    • Alfred K’Ombundo โ€“ Deputy Head of Mission in Belgium

According to the notice, these appointments follow Article 132 (2) (e) of the Constitution. The nominees will be vetted by the National Assembly before they officially assume office.

    Nakhumicha’s Plea for a Job

Nakhumichaโ€™s nomination comes after she publicly asked President Ruto to consider giving her another government job.

In October 2024, she revealed that losing her Cabinet position had been difficult and that she was facing financial struggles. She also noted that many people still referred to her as the Health CS due to her unique name.

โ€œBishop, pray for me. It is not easy to go from being a minister to just being Nakhumicha. My name is unique, and many still associate it with the Health CS position,โ€ she said.

    Why Nakhumicha Was Removed

Nakhumicha was dismissed from the Cabinet in July 2024, alongside most other Cabinet Secretaries, except for Foreign Affairs CS Musalia Mudavadi.

President Ruto explained that the decision was part of a strategy to restart his administration. He emphasized that the dismissals were made after a careful review of his governmentโ€™s performance.

Now, with this new appointment, Nakhumicha has been given another chance to serve in President Rutoโ€™s broad-based government.
