A new report has revealed a growing concern in Kenya: cars with registration plates starting with ‘KD’ are the most stolen. If you own a Toyota, your risk of theft is even higher.

    Shocking Statistics on Car Theft

The Association of Kenya Insurers (AKI) report shows that half of all stolen vehicles in 2024 had plates beginning with ‘KD’. In total, 327 vehicles were stolen, a decrease from 419 in 2023.

Breakdown of Stolen Cars by Plate Number:

    • KD – 50.15% of stolen vehicles

    • KB – 10.40%

Toyota Leads as the Most Stolen Car Brand

Toyota remains the top target for car thieves, making up 54.91% of stolen vehicles. Other frequently stolen brands include:

    • Isuzu – 12.88%
    • Mazda – 7.06%
    • Nissan – 5.83%
    • Mitsubishi – 3.99%

    Most Targeted Car Models

Station wagons, such as the Toyota Fielder and Subaru Outback, are the most stolen vehicles, accounting for 67.80% of cases. Other affected vehicle types include:

    • Lorries – 11.46%
    • Saloons – 6.81%
    • Pickups – 3.72%

The Role of Car Color in Theft

Car color also plays a role in theft trends. The most stolen colors are:

    • White – 39.80%
    • Silver – 16.72%
    • Black – 15.38%

    Value of Stolen Vehicles

Most stolen cars had an insured value of less than Ksh1 million. Other statistics on stolen car values include:

    • Vehicles worth Ksh1M – Ksh2M – 26.07%
    • Vehicles above Ksh3M – 27.3%
    • The most expensive stolen vehicle in 2024 was a Mitsubishi lorry worth Ksh12.2 million

    How Are Cars Stolen?

    • Theft of parts – 54.28% of cases
    • Cars stolen while parked – 31.91%
    • Hijackings – 7.24%

    Low Recovery Rates

Despite fewer thefts, recovery rates are still low. Only 15.92% of stolen cars were recovered in 2024, though this is an improvement from 11.72% in 2023.

    How to Protect Your Car

The National Police Service (NPS) advises car owners to boost security by:

    • Installing GPS trackers
    • Using steering and gear locks
    • Parking in secure locations
    • Avoiding leaving valuables in the car

With car thefts still a major issue, staying vigilant can help protect your vehicle from criminals.
