Canada Probes AI Firm Behind ChatGPT Over Ethics Concerns

Investigation into the collection, use, and disclosure of personal information without consent, in response to a complaint

Canada announced on Tuesday that it has opened an investigation into the U.S. software company responsible for the infamous artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT.

OpenAI was investigated by the Office of the Privacy Commissioner in response to a “complaint alleging the collection, use, and disclosure of personal information without consent,” according to the agency.

Launched in November, OpenAI’s chatbot utilizes online information to provide detailed responses to user queries.

Last year’s release of ChatGPT, which can generate essays, songs, exams, and even news articles from brief prompts, caused a global sensation.

However, critics have long feared that it was unclear where ChatGPT and its competitors obtained and processed their data.

According to Canadian privacy commissioner Philippe Dufresne, one of his primary areas of focus is keeping up with and staying ahead of rapid technological advancements.

ChatGPT is sometimes cited as a potential competitor to Google’s search engine, as it is backed by tech giant Microsoft, which has already integrated the tool into several of its services.

The move by Canada’s regulatory body is in response to growing calls for heightened oversight of AI-powered technologies.

Last week, billionaire Elon Musk – a founder of OpenAI but no longer a board member – and hundreds of global experts called for a six-month pause in research on AI systems more powerful than GPT-4, the most recent version of software upon which ChatGPT is based, citing “grave risks to society and humanity.”

Italy became the first Western nation to block ChatGPT on Friday due to concerns over data usage.

The European police agency Europol recently issued a warning that fraud and other cybercrimes will likely be committed using artificial intelligence such as conversational bots.
