Angola to Mediate Talks Between Congo and M23 Rebels

Angola announced on Tuesday that it will try to arrange direct talks between the Democratic Republic of Congo and the M23 rebels, who are backed by Rwanda. The discussions are expected to take place in the coming days.

    Will Congo Join the Talks?

It is unclear whether the Congolese government will participate, as it has refused to engage in discussions with M23 multiple times. However, Congoโ€™s presidential spokesperson acknowledged Angolaโ€™s efforts, while an M23 deputy spokesperson called the initiative “a victory of reason” and confirmed the groupโ€™s attendance.

    Angolaโ€™s Role in the Conflict

As a Southern African nation, Angola has been working to broker peace and reduce tensions between Congo and Rwanda. The Congolese government accuses Rwanda of supporting M23, a Tutsi-led rebel group. Rwanda denies these claims, stating that its forces are only acting in self-defense against the Congolese army and hostile militias.

    Background of the Conflict

M23 rebels have taken control of two major cities in eastern Congo since January, escalating a conflict that has lasted for years. The violence stems from the aftermath of Rwandaโ€™s 1994 genocide and the battle for control over Congoโ€™s vast mineral resources.

    Diplomatic Efforts

Congoโ€™s President Felix Tshisekedi recently visited Angolaโ€™s capital, Luanda, where he met with President Joao Lourenco. Angolaโ€™s presidency confirmed via Facebook that it will contact M23 to arrange negotiations in Luanda between the rebel group and Congoโ€™s government in the coming days.

This development raises hopes for a peaceful resolution to the long-standing conflict in eastern Congo.
