Boos, Jeers & Mass Walkout- Raila Odinga Humiliated in Kisii as Crowd Turns Hostile

Raila Heckled by Gusii Stadium Crowd

Kisii County has traditionally been one of Raila’s strongholds. However, this time, the crowd reacted differently. Some people cheered him, while others heckled and shouted anti-Ruto chants. Videos shared online showed sections of the crowd booing the ODM leader.

Governor Arati struggled to calm the audience when introducing the guests. The crowd became restless when Raila’s name was mentioned. Some attendees even left the stadium in large numbers when Raila started speaking, showing clear disapproval.

    Possible Reasons for the Hostility

The reason for the hostility remains unclear, but it comes just days after Raila signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA). The deal aimed to enhance cooperation between ODM and UDA, focusing on youth employment, the implementation of the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report, and the two-thirds gender rule.

Despite Raila stating that the agreement was for Kenya’s benefit, it received criticism from various quarters. Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka called it “the ultimate betrayal.”

Raila’s Comments on Matiang’i Stir Reactions

Another possible reason for the crowd’s reaction could be Raila’s recent remarks about former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i. Speaking in Kisii on March 6, Raila suggested that Matiang’i would struggle to beat President William Ruto in an election.

“There’s nothing like a community producing a candidate. Someone running for Kenya’s presidency cannot be elected based on Kisii votes, Luo votes, Luhya votes, or even Mount Kenya votes,” Raila said.

His comments may not have sat well with residents, leading to the cold reception he received at Gusii Stadium.

    Conclusion

Raila Odinga’s visit to Kisii showed a shift in political sentiments in the region. The mixed reaction could be linked to his recent political moves and comments. It remains to be seen how this will impact his support in the county moving forward.
