From Cabinet to Cabbages! Ex-Health CS Susan Nakhumicha Begs Ruto for a Job After Humble Fall
Kiminini Member of Parliament (MP) Maurice Kakai has urged President William Ruto to consider giving former Health Cabinet Secretary (CS) Susan Nakhumicha another government job.
Kakai made this request on Saturday, March 8, 2025, during the funeral of former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati. The funeral took place in Sabata village, Kiminini Constituency. During his speech, Kakai praised Nakhumicha, highlighting how she had helped Chebukati during his illness. He referred to statements made by Mary Chebukati, the late IEBC chairperson’s wife, who acknowledged Nakhumicha’s support.
The MP asked President Ruto to remember Nakhumicha when making future government appointments, especially as he continues to reorganize his administration.
“Your Excellency, as the MP of Kiminini, I must speak for my people. My sister Nakhumicha was doing an excellent job. Mama Mary has testified about her dedication, kindness, and focus while assisting the chairman. So, as you continue making changes in the government, please remember Nakhumicha,” he said.
Nakhumicha’s Story
This appeal came just a day after Susan Nakhumicha opened up about her current struggles. She revealed that she now sells cabbages to survive after losing her cabinet position.
Speaking on Friday, March 7, 2025, during a memorial service for the late Wafula Chebukati in Sabata village, Kiminini Constituency, Trans Nzoia County, Nakhumicha reflected on her connection with the former IEBC boss. She also spoke about her financial hardships since losing her job.

“Since that day, I have relied on God. Right now, I am farming. I plant cabbages in Cherang’any and sell them for a living. Contributing money for Chebukati’s funeral was tough, but I made an effort. I spent six hours with Mama Mary and eventually offered my donation in the form of cabbages,” she said.
Government Reshuffle
Nakhumicha lost her position when President Ruto reshuffled his cabinet following widespread anti-government protests.
Out of the ministers affected, nine were later reinstated, but 12, including Nakhumicha, were not brought back.
Deborah Barasa was appointed as the new Health Cabinet Secretary, replacing Nakhumicha.
