Shock and Panic as Top School Principal Found Dead Inside His House in Bomet
Students and teachers in Bomet County were left in deep sorrow on Tuesday, March 5, following the unexpected passing of a respected school principal.
The principal of Kaplong Boys High School, Mike Yator, was found dead inside his residence, which is located within the school compound.
His body was discovered on the morning of March 5 after he failed to report to work, raising concerns among staff and students.
Paul Kimetto, a representative from the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), stated that Yator had been in good health before his sudden death. He was cheerful and in high spirits as he welcomed students returning from their half-term break.
On Monday night, around 9:30 pm, Yator reportedly mentioned feeling exhausted. However, he did not seem worried about his health and did not seek medical attention. The following morning, when he did not show up for work, people went to check on him and found him lifeless.
In response to the tragic event, Kimetto urged the authorities to conduct a swift and thorough investigation to determine what led to the principal’s sudden death.
Mary Rotich, the Executive Secretary of KUPPET, along with Zablon Kipkoech Rono, the Treasurer from Kericho County, also expressed their deep sorrow over the loss.

Bomet County Police Commander Edward Imbwaga confirmed that investigations were ongoing to establish the cause of death.
Governor Hillary Barchok was among the first leaders to mourn Yator. He described him as a hardworking and passionate educator who was deeply loved by his students, fellow teachers, and the entire Kaplong Boys community. He noted that under Yatorโs leadership, the school excelled both in academics and extracurricular activities.
“On behalf of the people of Bomet and myself, I extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, students, parents, colleagues, the teaching fraternity, alumni, and the entire Kaplong community,” Barchok posted on social media.
This unfortunate incident came just weeks after another senior education officer, Johnson Nzioka, also passed away.
Nzioka, who was the chairperson of the Kenya Primary Schools Headteachers Association (KEPSHA) and the headteacher of Donholm Primary School in Nairobi, lost his life in a tragic accident along Mombasa Road on a Sunday afternoon.
