Auditor General’s Job on the Line? Ichung’wah Scrambles to Deny Plot to Oust Nancy Gathungu

National Assembly Majority Leader and Kikuyu MP, Kimani Ichung’wah, has denied claims that he has introduced a new Bill in Parliament aiming to remove the Auditor General as the head of the National Audit Office.

Reports had surfaced suggesting that the alleged Bill sought to strip the Auditor General of key powers by giving the Audit Advisory Board authority over budgets, staffing, and other major decisions. This would significantly reduce the independence of the Auditor General.

The rumors gained traction on social media after Auditor General Nancy Gathungu released a controversial report. In her findings, she stated that the government neither owns nor controls the Ksh.104.8 billion Social Health Authority (SHA).

Many people speculated that her report had displeased those in power. This led to suggestions that the supposed Bill might be a move to remove her from office as retaliation for her revelations.

However, Ichung’wah firmly denied these allegations in a statement on X (formerly Twitter). He dismissed the claims as false and misleading, accusing certain individuals of deliberately spreading lies to confuse the public.

“The propaganda masters have invented a fake Bill concerning the Auditor General’s office, filling it with imaginary provisions that exist only in their minds,” Ichung’wah stated.

He further explained that some of the alleged provisions in the Bill were not just impractical but also unconstitutional.

“Anyone who reads the actual Bills in Parliament will see that only fools would believe such unconstitutional ideas could be proposed,” he added.

Ichung’wah also urged Kenyans to verify information from credible sources. He advised them to visit the official Parliamentary website to get accurate details about all Bills currently under discussion.

“For truthful information on all Bills before Parliament, simply check the Parliamentary website and ignore misleading propaganda,” he concluded.
