Ruto Hits Back at Standard for Calling Him Cunning President, Says His Success Is God’s Grace
On Sunday, President William Ruto responded to a newspaper headline that called him a cunning leader.
While speaking at a church service at Jesus Winner Ministry in Roysambu, Nairobi, Ruto said that the Standard Newspaper’s headline, “Cunning Ruto,” was based on recent political events. He explained that his opponents had tried to bring him down, but he had managed to overcome the challenges.
“If you read today’s Standard newspaper, the headline says Ruto is very cunning. But I want to tell them that I am not as cunning as they think. It is God’s grace that is guiding me. We trust in God,” Ruto said.
He further explained that his ability to avoid political traps was not because of any tricks but because of God’s favor. He compared himself to Abraham from the Bible, saying that Abraham trusted God even in difficult times. “They say I am cunning just because I did not fall into their traps. But that is not true. It is God’s grace,” he added.
Ruto claimed that certain people, whom he did not mention, had hoped to see him fail. However, he was able to avoid their plans and succeed. “They set many traps for us. They wanted us to fall at some point. But we managed to escape all of them,” he said.

The Standard newspaper’s Sunday edition had the headline “Cunning Ruto” and focused on his recent political moves, including early campaigning ahead of the 2027 elections. The subheadline suggested that while the country was struggling with problems, the President was skilled at creating distractions to make people forget about the real issues. It also pointed out that despite his attempts to divert attention, the challenges continued to increase.
The article further argued that since Ruto became President, he had mastered the art of shifting focus from scandals and crises affecting his administration. It mentioned that different sectors, including health, education, security, energy, transport, and diplomacy, were facing major problems, some of which could seriously affect the government.
“The President has perfected the art of making headlines with unexpected announcements, while other major issues remain unnoticed,” the publication stated.
During the same church service, Ruto donated Ksh20 million to the church. He dismissed criticism from people who faulted him for making large donations to religious institutions.
He also brought up an incident where the Catholic Church in Nairobi, led by Philip Anyolo, had returned money that he had donated to one of their parishes. Ruto said that he had read the Bible carefully but had not found any verse saying that money given to God should be returned.
“I love reading the Bible, and I have tried to find a verse that says when you give to God, the bishop should return it to you. Have you ever seen such a verse? Does it exist?” he asked.
