Babu Owino Declares War: “Nothing Can Chase Me Out of ODM—Not Even Sakaja”
Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has made it clear that he will not leave the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) under any circumstances.
In a recent interview, Babu emphasized that he is a committed member of the ODM party and has no plans to quit. He was responding to speculations about Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja possibly joining ODM and using its ticket to run for re-election in 2027.
Babu strongly believes that Sakaja does not align with ODM’s principles, making him an unsuitable fit for the party. Despite any political developments, Babu assured that he will remain loyal to Raila Odinga, whom he credits for his political success.
“Sakaja cannot push me out of ODM. He has never supported Baba (Raila Odinga) before. No matter what happens, I will continue to stand with Raila because he is my leader,” Babu stated.
It is widely believed that Babu is preparing to contest for the Nairobi governor’s seat in the 2027 elections.

Recently, Raila sparked mixed reactions when he appeared to endorse Sakaja’s leadership in Nairobi. During a prayer event held for him ahead of the African Union Commission (AUC) elections in Addis Ababa, Raila openly praised Sakaja. The event, which took place at Bomas of Kenya, saw Raila referring to Sakaja as “my son” while raising his hand in approval.
This public display led to speculation that Raila was endorsing Sakaja for re-election. However, the ODM party later addressed the matter to clear any misunderstandings.
ODM’s national chairperson, Gladys Wanga, denied claims that Raila had backed Sakaja for 2027. Speaking in a radio interview, Wanga explained that Raila’s remarks were taken out of context.
According to Wanga, Raila was simply acknowledging Sakaja’s role as the current Nairobi governor and wishing him well in his work. She reassured ODM members that all aspirants would get a fair chance to compete for the party’s gubernatorial ticket.
She also clarified that there were no plans to sideline Babu Owino from the race.
“No one is stopping Babu from running for any position in the party. Raila only meant that he wants Nairobi to be strong and well-governed. His statement had nothing to do with the 2027 elections,” Wanga explained.
