Ruto Dangles Development Carrots in Nyanza After Raila’s AUC Flop!

President William Ruto has promised to complete various development projects in the Nyanza region as part of his government’s broader agenda.

He gave this assurance while emphasizing that he and opposition leader Raila Odinga remain united despite Odinga’s unsuccessful attempt to become the African Union Commission (AUC) chairman.

The planned projects, which include infrastructure improvements such as roads, water supply systems, and industrial centers, are part of the government’s effort to strengthen national unity. However, the broad-based government has faced criticism from former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

Ruto’s administration expressed its commitment to building long-lasting relationships, acknowledging the support it received from allies in both government affairs and the AUC election.

One of the key projects set for completion is the Lake Region Ring Road, which is expected to improve transport and trade in the region.

Additionally, stalled water projects, including the Koru-Soin and Magwagwa dams, will be revived to enhance water access and support agriculture.

The government also aims to improve the sugar industry, a major source of income in Nyanza. Efforts will focus on revamping sugarcane processing plants and settling debts that have hindered operations for years.

To support the fishing industry, the administration pledged to speed up the construction of a fish processing plant and complete the Homa Bay Modern Fish Market. This project is expected to benefit over 2,000 fish traders.

There are also plans to improve marine transport by rehabilitating piers in Kendu Bay, Mbita, and Asembo Bay. Additionally, the launch of MV Uhuru 2 is expected to boost transportation and economic activity on Lake Victoria.

In the housing sector, the government is preparing to roll out affordable housing projects in Siaya, Kisumu, and Migori counties to address the housing shortage.

A key project in Alego Usonga will see the construction of 882 housing units, while in Kisumu, a 2,348-unit scheme in Lumumba is expected to reshape the city.

The government’s economic plans for the region also include launching the Lake Basin Mall and establishing the Lake Victoria Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre.
