Rigathi Gachagua Plots Political Earthquake: Vows to Trigger ‘Mini General Election’

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has announced plans to trigger a series of by-elections once the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is fully reconstituted.

Speaking on Monday, February 24, Gachagua stated that he had delayed launching his new political party to give time for the IEBC to be put in place. According to him, several Members of County Assemblies (MCAs) and Members of Parliament (MPs) are prepared to step down from the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party and seek a fresh mandate from voters.

“We have chosen to wait for the IEBC to be reconstituted before unveiling our party. This will lead to multiple by-elections. As of today, 139 MCAs have expressed their willingness to resign from UDA and contest again in by-elections,” Gachagua revealed.

He further stated that this move would be similar to a mini-general election, as many leaders from the Mt Kenya region no longer wish to stay in a political setup they do not believe in. “The people of Mt Kenya are truthful and principled. They cannot continue living a lie. That is why we will push for a partial general election once the IEBC is reconstituted,” he added.

Gachagua assured elected leaders from the region that they would have strong support from voters if they resigned and sought re-election. He encouraged them to take the bold step, arguing that such a move would earn them respect and solidify their political careers.

“I urge our MCAs, MPs, and Senators to make the courageous choice of resigning and returning to the people. From the feedback I am getting, anyone who takes this step will win by a huge margin and be celebrated as a hero. Their political future will be bright for many years,” he stated.

His comments come as the IEBC selection panel confirmed receiving 1,848 applications for the roles of chairperson and commissioners. The panel will now begin shortlisting candidates, with interviews expected to start in mid-March 2025.

After the interviews, the panel must submit its final list of nominees to President William Ruto by the end of April. The names will then be forwarded to the National Assembly for vetting and approval before the new IEBC team is officially appointed.
