Ruto’s Friday Call With US Secretary Marco Rubio – Key Details Revealed
The U.S. Secretary of State’s office has announced that Marco Rubio spoke on the phone with Kenyan President William Ruto on Friday, February 21.
According to a statement from office spokesperson Tammy Bruce, their discussion focused on the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
A key topic was the takeover of Goma and Bukavu by the M23 rebel group. The U.S. strongly condemned this development, stating that the armed group was receiving support from Rwanda.
President Ruto emphasized the need for a peaceful resolution to the crisis.
“Secretary of State Marco Rubio had a conversation with Kenyan President William Ruto regarding the ongoing violence in eastern DRC. They specifically addressed the alarming seizure of Goma and Bukavu by the M23 rebels, who are believed to have backing from Rwanda.

“They both stressed that the conflict cannot be solved through military means and urged for an immediate ceasefire. Additionally, they reaffirmed their commitment to finding a diplomatic solution,” the statement read.
Currently, President Ruto serves as the chairperson of the East African Community (EAC). In recent weeks, he has called for urgent meetings with other regional leaders to address the situation in DRC, especially after the armed group took control of Goma.
He also co-chaired a meeting with representatives from the Southern African Development Community (SADC), an organization that has already deployed troops in DRC.
The ongoing crisis presents a major diplomatic challenge for Ruto and Kenya, as tensions continue between DRC’s President Felix Tshisekedi and Rwandan President Paul Kagame, with both sides making accusations against each other.
