KAA Responds as Wildfire Erupts Near JKIA Runway, Firefighters Battle Blaze
A wildfire has broken out on the grassland near Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), spreading towards 75 Airport North Road.
The Kenya Red Cross reports that the fire has been burning for nearly 30 minutes. Videos and images show flames creeping dangerously close to the airport’s runway, with one clip from a landing plane capturing the blaze nearby.

Emergency response teams, including firefighters and police, are at the scene working to contain the fire. However, the Kenya Red Cross confirms that the flames remain uncontained.

No government agency has officially addressed the fire, and it is unclear if flights will be affected at Kenya’s busiest airport. Meanwhile, videos circulating online show Kenyans gathered outside the airport fence, watching the unfolding incident.
The cause of the fire is still unknown, but many online users are urging swift action to prevent further escalation.
Ironically, the fire comes just as JKIA was honored with the African Cargo Airport of the Year award at the STAT Times International Awards for Excellence in Air Cargo.
The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) celebrated the win, stating that it highlights JKIA’s critical role in boosting trade and logistics across Africa. Dr. Rose Koros, JKIA’s General Manager, received the award alongside Cargo Manager Jacob Bwana and Product & Brand Manager Debra Ondaba.
