Chebukati’s Family Requests Privacy as They Mourn
The family of former IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati has urged Kenyans to respect their privacy as they grieve their loved one.
Speaking to the media on Friday morning, family spokesperson Eric Wafula confirmed that a detailed statement regarding Chebukati’s passing would be released soon.
“We are deeply saddened by this loss. As we come to terms with it, we kindly ask everyone, including the media, to allow us the privacy to mourn,” he stated.
He added that the family planned to issue an official statement by tomorrow after holding a meeting later in the evening.
Chebukati’s Final Moments
According to the spokesperson, Chebukati’s father and other close family members rushed to Nairobi on Thursday night after learning about his passing.
The former IEBC chairperson passed away at a Nairobi hospital on Thursday, February 20, shortly before 11 PM. While the cause of death remains undisclosed, the spokesperson urged the public to avoid speculation.

Post-Mortem Decision Pending
The family has yet to decide whether an autopsy will be conducted. Wafula noted that this matter would be discussed in a family meeting scheduled for tomorrow.
“He had been unwell and was hospitalized. He passed away around 11 PM last night,” Wafula said.
“If the family agrees to a post-mortem and after consulting with doctors, we will provide more details on the cause of death. Until then, we ask for patience and no speculation,” he added.
Leaders Mourn Chebukati
Chebukati’s body has been transferred to Lee Funeral Home as the family deliberates on the next steps.
Meanwhile, tributes have been pouring in from leaders across the country. President William Ruto described Chebukati as a dedicated and principled leader.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of former IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati. He was a man of integrity who served the nation diligently,” Ruto stated.
“His death is a great loss to our country. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time. Rest in peace.”
