Anti-Terror Police Arrest Assistant Chief Over Fake IDs for Suspected Terrorists
Detectives have arrested an assistant chief for allegedly helping two terror suspects obtain fraudulent Kenyan identification documents.
The official, who serves in Bula Power sub-location, Mandera Township, was apprehended on Thursday, February 20, just days after two foreign nationals were arrested over suspected terror links.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the assistant chief is accused of assisting the suspects in acquiring Kenyan identification by facilitating the issuance of an acknowledgment for a waiting card.
โThe assistant chief has been processed, with detectives and other security agencies working tirelessly to ensure the safety of Mandera residents and those operating within the town,โ the DCI stated.
Terror Suspects Planned to Kidnap Chinese Workers
On February 18, the Anti-Terror Police Unit (ATPU) arrested two terror suspects accused of plotting to abduct Chinese nationals working on a sewer project in Mandera Township.
One of the suspects is believed to have crossed into Kenya from El-Adde, Somalia, before forging Kenyan documents to disguise himself as a citizen. Both suspects will face charges under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA).
Mandera: A Growing Terror Hotspot
Mandera has seen a surge in terrorist activity due to its proximity to Somalia, a stronghold for al-Shabaab militants. Despite increased security efforts, terror groups continue to find ways to evade authorities.
Earlier this month, five local chiefs were abducted in Mandera County, with al-Shabaab demanding a ransom of KSh 7 million. The officials were traveling to Elwak for duty when their vehicle was hijacked and driven towards Lafey, a known terror hub.
Notably, this attack occurred just a day before President William Ruto’s planned visit to Mandera for a development tour.
