South Korea’s President Yoon Becomes First Sitting Leader Arrested Amid Political Crisis

South Korea’s President Yoon Suk Yeol has become the first sitting president to be arrested, ending a weeks-long standoff between investigators and his security.

Yoon, who tried to impose martial law in a move that caused national unrest and led to his impeachment, is now under investigation for charges of insurrection.

While his impeachment is still being reviewed by the constitutional court, Yoon remains technically the president. Investigators had to use ladders and wirecutters in freezing conditions to break through barricades set up by Yoon’s security in order to arrest him.

In a brief video, the 64-year-old leader said he would cooperate with the investigation to avoid violence, despite opposing it. He has consistently argued that the arrest warrant is invalid.

Yoon recounted how authorities breached his home’s security using fire equipment and emphasized his decision to comply with the investigation to prevent bloodshed. More than 1,000 officers participated in the operation, which marked the second attempt to arrest him. This was after Yoon ignored several summons to appear for questioning.

Yoon’s party condemned the arrest as unlawful, with their leader calling the situation “regretful.” On the other hand, opposition leader Park Chan-dae argued that the arrest proved justice was still alive in South Korea and was an important step toward restoring the rule of law.

Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok is currently acting president after the first acting president, Han Duck-soo, was also impeached. After being questioned, Yoon is expected to be detained at the Seoul Detention Centre unless the court rules otherwise within 48 hours.

This arrest marks a significant moment in South Koreaโ€™s political crisis, but the situation remains unresolved. The public is deeply divided, with some celebrating the arrest while others are outraged, feeling the rule of law has been violated.

The standoff between law enforcement and presidential security highlights the growing tension between different branches of government. Yoonโ€™s leadership had already been weakened after his martial law attempt and his political struggles with the opposition-majority parliament. Additionally, his wife faced controversy over a Dior bag gift.
