Kenyan Outcry: Over 300 Emails Urge Dutch Gov’t to Cancel Royal Trip

The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed receiving over 300 emails from Kenyans requesting the cancellation of a planned state visit by King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima.

The visit, scheduled for March 18–20, 2025, was arranged at the invitation of Kenyan President William Ruto and is seen as a significant milestone in the relationship between the Netherlands and Kenya.

However, some Kenyans have expressed their disapproval of the visit, citing concerns over the current situation in their country.

They argue that Kenya is grappling with serious human rights issues, including abductions and enforced disappearances targeting government critics and opposition figures from neighboring countries.

These concerns have prompted many to directly appeal to the Dutch government to cancel the visit.

Dutch public broadcaster Nederlandse Omroep Stichting (NOS) reported that the Foreign Affairs Ministry acknowledged the receipt of these emails.

Despite this, the ministry emphasized that the visit would proceed as planned. They stated that it presents an opportunity to address the alleged human rights violations with the Kenyan government.

In an official statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, speaking on behalf of the Government Information Service, confirmed awareness of the human rights concerns.

The ministry reiterated that the Netherlands frequently speaks out against such violations, both publicly and in discussions with Kenyan authorities.

They see the visit as a chance to engage in meaningful dialogue on sensitive issues, including human rights.

This will be the first state visit to Kenya by the Dutch monarchs, highlighting the enduring relationship between the two nations.

According to a statement from the Dutch royal palace, the visit aims to strengthen partnerships and deepen cooperation in key areas such as sustainable agriculture, water management, and climate action.
