Kabogo Reveals How He Will Deal With Kenyans Sharing Coffin Photos
William Kabogo, nominated for Information Cabinet Secretary, pledged on Tuesday, January 14, to engage more with Gen Z to address the growing issue of images of leaders in coffins being shared on social media.
During his vetting by the Committee on Appointments in the National Assembly Mini Chambers, Kabogo was asked about actions he would take to tackle the misuse of social media by younger people. He stressed the importance of teaching the youth to use the internet ethically as a way to change the current trend.
“We need to engage Gen Z and millennials in using the internet responsibly. Today, they’re Gen Z, but in a few years, they’ll be parents,” Kabogo said.
He added, “If they post images of me in a coffin, they need to think about how they would feel if it were their father. We need real conversations with those involved in this behavior.”
Kabogo also mentioned the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act, which addresses such issues. However, he called for better enforcement and regular updates to the law to tackle the problem effectively.
“The laws are there, like the Computer Misuse and Cyber Crimes Act, but we need to improve how it’s enforced and review it regularly,” Kabogo noted.
He also emphasized the importance of balancing freedom of expression with regulation to ensure that one person’s freedom doesn’t harm another’s.

“We must balance freedom of expression with protecting the rights of others in Kenya,” Kabogo said.
Kabogo’s calm approach contrasts with Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen’s more aggressive stance. Murkomen recently vowed to prosecute those misusing social media by posting offensive images of Kenyan leaders.
Murkomen made his statement on January 10 during the launch of sub-county offices in Turbo, attended by President William Ruto, who has been targeted in these images.
“I assure you, Your Excellency, that we will address this behavior. We will charge anyone using social media to threaten others. If we don’t, we risk losing control of our country,” Murkomen said.
The sharing of offensive images has led to a series of alleged abductions, where people who posted such images went missing for a period. These abductions sparked protests, with local leaders, the public, and international groups calling for the release and fair trials of the youths involved.
