ODM Responds to Fistfight Claims Among Top Officials During Closed-Door Meeting
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party has dismissed rumors of a divide within the party following reports of a physical confrontation among senior members.
Acting ODM Party Leader Anyang’ Nyong’o issued a statement on January 14, addressing the recent claims and providing details of a key meeting in Nairobi, where he emphasized that there was no ideological conflict threatening the party.
Nyong’o stated that the meeting on Friday, January 10, took place in an atmosphere of respect and shared goals.
โI was shocked and disappointed by media reports suggesting there were disagreements, even claiming there were fistfights. Let me be clear: this is completely false. The meeting was conducted with mutual respect and unity,โ said the Kisumu governor in his statement.

The party’s response came after a local newspaper reported growing tensions within ODM, allegedly due to party leader Raila Odinga’s new relationship with President William Ruto. Recently, Ruto supported Raila’s bid for the African Union Commission chairperson position.
The report also mentioned ODM figures such as Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga and Suna East MP Junet Mohammed, who were accused of getting too close to the Kenya Kwanza government, sidelining ODM’s goals.
On Friday, ODM reassured its supporters, clarifying that it remains an independent party with no plans to merge with Ruto’s UDA.
ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna confirmed, “ODM remains a separate political entity competing with others for power through democratic means,” and reaffirmed the partyโs focus on the 2027 elections.
