DCI warns Kenyans- “Obstructing officers executing their constitutional mandate is a serious criminal offense”

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has sounded an alarm after officers faced resistance from a hostile mob in Kiamanyeki, Mwea East. The confrontation, which occurred on Sunday, January 12, 2025, nearly thwarted an arrest operation.

Kirinyaga Central detectives were dispatched to apprehend a suspect linked to a violent robbery. After tracking the individual to the area, the officers moved in to make the arrest. However, their efforts were met with aggression from a mob that threatened to torch their government vehicle, registration number KBZ 684Y, unless the suspect was released.

Fortunately, local police, the area chief, and Nyumba Kumi officials intervened to de-escalate the situation, enabling the detectives to arrest the suspect and secure the scene.

    Public Warning from DCI

Following the incident, DCI issued a stern warning to the public, emphasizing that obstructing lawful arrests or aiding a suspect’s escape is a criminal act.

“Obstructing police officers in the execution of their constitutional duties is a serious offense,” the DCI stated. “Threatening life or property under any circumstances will be met with the full force of the law.”

    Rising Public Tensions Over Abductions

The violent reaction in Kiamanyeki reflects growing unease among citizens amid reports of abductions involving unmarked vehicles. While the National Police Service has distanced itself from such incidents, the public remains vigilant, fearing for their safety.

DCI has urged Kenyans to respect law enforcement processes and avoid taking matters into their own hands, stressing that such actions undermine justice and public safety.
