Man in Viral Ongata Rongai Alleged Abduction Video Speaks

New revelations indicate that police were carrying out an arrest in the now-viral video from Ongata Rongai, where a man was forcefully bundled into a saloon car on Friday, January 10. The footage initially fueled concerns of abduction due to its similarity to other alarming videos online.

According to police, the man, identified only as Duke, was apprehended along Magadi Road near Barclays in Rongai. He was reportedly caught attempting to scam an MPESA shop. Duke is currently held at Ongata Rongai Police Station and is set to face charges in court.

CCTV footage obtained by Citizen TV shows Duke approaching the MPESA shop near Tumaini area around 12:30 PM. While pretending to seek help, Duke handed the agent his phone, requesting they speak with a supposed “customer care” representative. The person on the line claimed to assist in retrieving funds from Duke’s account.

The MPESA agent, suspecting foul play, alerted a nearby businessman for help and called the authorities. Elvis Muthoni, the shop operator, explained:

“Someone came in, gave me a phone, and asked me to talk to customer care. While I was on the call, another number kept calling him. That’s when I suspected something was off.”

Plain-clothed officers in an unmarked vehicle arrived at the scene, detained Duke outside the shop, and placed him in their car.

Duke later claimed he didn’t realize they were officers and panicked, thinking he was being abducted. As the car drove towards the station, about 1.5 kilometers away, Duke tried to escape by opening the door. The officers restrained him, which led to the viral video being recorded and shared widely online.

Duke, however, denied being involved in any crime, stating, “The person on the phone just asked me to find an MPESA shop and hand the phone to the agent. I didn’t know what was happening when I was arrested.”

The incident stirred mixed reactions on social media, with many initially mistaking it for a kidnapping. Police have since clarified the situation and confirmed that Duke remains in custody with minor injuries. Investigations are ongoing, and authorities are pursuing the individual posing as the fake customer care agent.
