KNEC Withholds KCSE Results for Kalonzo-Linked School  Over Cheating Allegations

As students across Kenya settle into their new realities following the January 9 release of the KCSE results, candidates at Mama Malia Academy remain in uncertainty.

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has withheld the results for all 92 students at the private school, operated under the Kalonzo Musyoka Foundation, citing allegations of exam malpractice.

Naomi Ndambuki, the school’s principal, expressed her shock upon receiving a brief letter from KNEC, which stated that an investigation was underway. “The letter didn’t provide many details and only mentioned that the findings would be shared later,” Ndambuki said.

Efforts by reporters to obtain comments from the school proved unsuccessful, as calls to its management were cut off without further information.

Mama Malia Academy, founded by Pauline Musyoka, wife of Kalonzo Musyoka, gained national attention in 2022 for its remarkable improvement in KCSE results. That year, it ranked among the top seven most improved schools in the country, and in 2023, it produced the most improved student nationwide.

The academy primarily serves underprivileged students from multiple counties, many of whom receive sponsorships from the Kalonzo Musyoka Foundation, which focuses on empowering youth and fostering a democratic society.

The incident adds Mama Malia Academy to the growing list of schools implicated in exam malpractice. Another school facing similar scrutiny is Lugulu Girls High School in Kakamega County, where results were also withheld, leaving parents and students in turmoil.

Additionally, Matinyani Boys Secondary School saw several candidates’ results canceled this year due to confirmed irregularities.

Education CS Julius Ogamba, while announcing the KCSE 2024 results, disclosed that the results for 2,389 candidates across the country had been withheld pending a 30-day investigation into suspected cheating.

The withheld results have sparked panic and uncertainty among affected students and their families, who now await the outcomes of KNEC’s investigations.
