ODM Breaks Silence on Supporting Ruto in 2027 Elections

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has dismissed claims it plans to back President William Ruto’s re-election in 2027, emphasizing its independence as a political party.

Addressing the press on Friday, January 10, ODM urged members to avoid spreading speculative narratives about upcoming elections or political alliances.

In a statement by the Central Management Committee, led by acting party leader and Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o, ODM underscored its commitment to winning power on its terms in the 2027 elections.

“ODM remains an independent political party, competing with others to secure leadership through democratic means,” stated ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna.

This clarification follows comments by Kisumu Senator Tom Ojienda, who suggested that ODM might collaborate with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) in the next election. Ojienda speculated that ODM could secure a running mate position on Ruto’s ticket, claiming Raila Odinga might take on a new role as African Union Commission chairperson.

Responding firmly, ODM warned its members against making premature declarations about the party’s future. “ODM remains distinct and committed to democratic competition. Members must refrain from echoing narratives that align with our competitors and focus on fortifying the party for future challenges,” the statement read.

The party’s remarks come as President William Ruto, speaking in Uasin Gishu, expressed confidence in winning a second term despite mounting public criticism of his government.

โ€œI donโ€™t see any serious competition. My track record is my main competitor,โ€ Ruto declared during his Friday address.

The collaboration between Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga has stirred debate among political analysts, some calling it a strategic political maneuver. Additionally, Ruto’s successful efforts to bring former President Uhuru Kenyatta into his administration after impeaching his first deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, in October have further fueled political intrigue.
