Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya Fires Back at Critics After Outbursts in Bungoma Speech

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has silenced his critics following a powerful speech delivered during a memorial service in Bungoma.

Natembeya joined other leaders in Kabuchai to pay tribute to Mama Anne Nanyama, the late mother of National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula. His address stirred controversy among pro-government politicians as he condemned recent abductions linked to state operatives.

On Saturday, January 4, Natembeya reaffirmed his commitment to speaking truth to power through a tweet, pledging to hold leaders accountable without succumbing to intimidation.

The governor criticized the governmentโ€™s heavy-handed actions, accusing it of targeting young Kenyans with abductions and killings over alleged insults directed at senior officials. He urged President William Ruto to take decisive action against these extrajudicial practices.

Among his detractors was National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichungโ€™wah, who accused Natembeya of hypocrisy. Ichungโ€™wah alleged that during Natembeyaโ€™s tenure as Rift Valley Regional Commissioner, he enabled similar atrocities, including abductions and killings in Kerio Valley and River Yala.

โ€œGovernor Natembeya, if you have information about the abductors, share it with the DCI. You were once in a position of power when such actions occurred. Why didnโ€™t you act then? Your divisive politics and incitement wonโ€™t succeed,โ€ Ichungโ€™wah stated.

Natembeya dismissed the allegations, maintaining that he left his government role with a clean record, free from scandals or involvement in human rights violations.
