Natembeya Reveals He was Attacked by Leaders After Urging Ruto to End Abductions

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has strongly rejected verbal attacks made against him during the funeral of Mama Anne Nanyama Wetangula, mother of National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula, in Kabuchai, Bungoma County.

In a statement on Friday, January 3, Natembeya responded to accusations from some political figures, who claimed he was involved in abductions and killings during his time as Regional Commissioner. He dismissed these allegations as false, emphasizing his commitment to public service and a clean record.

“Some politicians have accused me of being an abductor and murderer responsible for the deaths of innocent Kenyans in the previous government. Let it be clear that I served the people of Kenya with honesty and dedication. I resigned from my position as Regional Commissioner without any scandal,” he said.

Natembeya believes the attacks are a result of his outspoken criticism of extrajudicial abductions, an issue he has urged President William Rutoโ€™s administration to address.

“My work as Regional Commissioner earned me the trust of the people of Trans Nzoia, who later elected me as their governor. The reason some leaders are insulting me is that I courageously urged the President to end abductions and release the youths who were taken. These families are suffering, not knowing where their children are,” he explained.

He also criticized political leaders who, according to him, focus on personal gain instead of addressing important national issues. Natembeya reaffirmed his commitment to serving Kenya and vowed to collaborate with like-minded leaders to improve the region.

“Criticizing abductions is not an attack on the President. We all have a responsibility to ensure state bodies follow the rule of law. Some politicians lack emotional intelligence, responding to cheers without considering the long-term consequences of their actions,” he stated.

“I strongly condemn these baseless attacks. I will not be intimidated by hired thugs. The goal of freeing the Luhya community from self-serving politicians will not be derailed. My fellow Luhya leaders and I, along with others who share our vision, will continue to represent the people of Kenya,” he concluded.

During the funeral, Natembeya and Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah clashed over the issue of abductions. Ichung’wah accused Natembeya of inciting divisions and urged him to provide any information he might have to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

“Governor Natembeya, if you know who is behind the abductions, as a former regional commissioner, you should help the DCI in their investigation,” Ichung’wah said. “You were in charge when people were abducted and killed in Kerio Valley. Did you not value Kenyan lives then? Your attempts to divide Kenyans along tribal lines will not succeed.”
