Ruto Responds to Viral ‘Kasongo’ Nickname

President William Ruto has publicly addressed the name “Kasongo,” which some people have recently used to refer to him.

Speaking at a funeral in Bungoma on Friday, Ruto responded to recent criticism and said he had no problem with the nicknames Kenyans use for him.

โ€œHio Kasongo ni sawa. Ni wimbo mzuri sana ambayo ilikuwa inaendelea, so hio Kasongo tuendelee nayo (That Kasongo song is fine, itโ€™s a very good song, so letโ€™s keep playing it),โ€ he said.

Ruto also addressed the nickname โ€œZakayoโ€ (Zaccheus), describing it as fitting, given his administrationโ€™s focus on tax collection to ensure Kenyaโ€™s development.

โ€ he said.

This was loosely translated as, โ€œThat Zakayo name is not bad either because collecting taxes to develop Kenya is not bad, and Jesus visited Zakayo. Now, if you are not Zakayo, how will Jesus visit you?โ€

Ruto shared his thoughts at the funeral of National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangulaโ€™s mother in Bungoma County.

His comments came after he danced to the popular Kasongo song during the New Yearโ€™s Eve celebration at Kisii State Lodge.

The song has gone viral on social media, with many using it to comment on his administration.

Originally performed by Super Mazembe, the track is making a comeback in Kenya, becoming a symbol for social and political discussions.

Written and sung by the legendary Alley Katele, the song tells the tale of a woman asking her estranged husband to return.

Recently, Kenyans on social media have added their satirical lyrics, poking fun at the countryโ€™s political leaders.
