Ruto’s MD Appointment Rejected by East Africa Portland Board

The East Africa Portland Cement Company (EAPCC) board has declined to approve the appointment of Bruno Oguda Obodha as managing director, despite his nomination by President Ruto on December 20.

In a Friday meeting at the company’s Nairobi offices, the board raised concerns about Mr. Obodha’s integrity and potential conflicts of interest.

A letter addressed to the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment outlined these issues, citing Circular Ref No. OP/CAB.9/1A dated April 20, 2022, which flagged Mr. Obodha’s involvement in questionable dealings with EAPCC.

According to the board chairman, Brigadier Richard Mbithi, Mr. Obodha is a director at Geoner Systems & Massel Real Property, a firm currently contracted to sell a portion of LR No. 10424.

This, the board stated, constitutes a clear conflict of interest. Additionally, the board revealed that Mr. Obodha is a director at Brumec International Security Company Limited, which submitted a bid containing forged documents for a tender floated by EAPCC in October 2024.

The board emphasized it was unaware of these red flags when it initially recommended three candidates for the managing director position. In the selection process held on November 22, 2024, at Taj Towers, Mr. Mohammed Osman Adan emerged as the top candidate with a score of 88.15%, while Mr. Obodha scored 64%, narrowly beating Dr. Justa Mwangi, who scored 63.86%.

Mr. Obodhaโ€™s appointment sparked protests among EAPCC workers, who temporarily shut down operations at the Athi River plant on December 23. Normal operations have since resumed.
