This realignment comes after Ruto nominated Mutahi Kagwe (Agriculture), Lee Kinyanjui (Trade), and William Kabogo (Information) to the Cabinet. The nominees are set to face vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee on January 14, 2025.
The vetting schedule begins with Kagwe at noon, Kabogo at 3 PM, and concludes with Kinyanjui at 5 PM. All three nominees are allies of former President Uhuru Kenyatta, sparking speculation of deeper political collaboration between Ruto and his predecessor.
Dubbed the “Ichaweri Summit,” their recent meeting reportedly paved the way for a ‘super broad-based government’ to include leaders from across the political spectrum. This move follows the integration of Raila Odinga’s allies after the July-August Gen Z protests.
President Ruto defended the nominations as a step toward national unity, expressing his confidence in their ability to tackle pressing issues. Speaking at AIC Kipkorgot Church in Uasin Gishu, he emphasized the importance of unity in driving Kenyaโs development agenda.
