Secret Abduction Squad Hides in CBD, Gachagua Claims

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has accused a covert unit of orchestrating the recent wave of abductions across the country.

According to Gachagua, the group operates under the leadership of a man he referred to as โ€œAbel,โ€ allegedly related to a high-ranking government figure.

โ€œThis unit is not under the control of the Inspector General of Police. It operates from a building in Nairobi, on the 21st floor in the city center. The leader, Abel, is reportedly a cousin to a senior government official,โ€ Gachagua claimed during a press briefing on Friday.

The former Deputy President issued a warning, saying, โ€œIf this unit isnโ€™t dismantled, weโ€™ll reveal the buildingโ€™s name and the full identities of Abel and his cousin. Itโ€™s not hard to figure out who commands this group.โ€

Gachagua criticized President William Ruto for staying silent amid the abductions, pointing out that many victims are individuals who have openly criticized the administration.

He further noted the growing public dissatisfaction with the government, stating, โ€œThe Kenyan people are angry. Killing our children will not suppress their outrage. Abductions are not the solution. The government must address the root causes of this discontent.โ€

Gachagua alleged that Rutoโ€™s administration is the first since independence to specifically target young people. โ€œThe President needs to ask himself why, within just two years, this administration has lost the trust of so many,โ€ he said.

His remarks come amid heightened concerns over the surge in abductions, with 82 cases reported since June. Six victims were abducted in December alone, including cartoonist Gideon Kibet, known as Kibet Bull, who had posted controversial content about President Ruto online.

Inspector General Douglas Kanja has denied claims of police involvement, urging the public to avoid spreading โ€œfalse and maliciousโ€ allegations.

โ€œThe National Police Service is not responsible for these incidents. We ask the public to refrain from sharing unverified information meant to damage the reputation of the police force,โ€ said Kanja.

Similarly, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) distanced itself from the recent kidnappings.

The victims include Steve Kavingo Mbisi, Billy Mwangi, Peter Muteti, Bernard Kavuli, Rony Kiplangโ€™at, and Gideon Kibet. Their abductions have raised concerns about freedom of expression and the safety of individuals critical of the government.
