Her family confirmed her passing on the evening of Thursday, December 26, sharing that she lost her fight with the illness. โThe family of Janet Wanja is deeply saddened to announce her passing after a courageous battle with cancer,โ read a statement.
The family expressed gratitude to Kenya Pipeline for fully covering Wanjaโs medical expenses earlier in December following a public appeal for help.
Wanja, who served as a cornerstone of the Kenya Pipeline volleyball team from 2005 to 2019, was among the nationโs most celebrated players. โOur heartfelt thanks go to Kenya Pipeline for standing by us throughout this journey and ensuring she received all necessary medical support,โ the statement added.

After retiring, Wanja took on the role of fitness trainer for the Malkia Strikers. Her first assignment was at the East African Community Games in Kigali, Rwanda, in January 2024.
Despite her quiet battle with cancer, Wanja joined the Malkia Strikers at the Paris Olympics earlier this year. The team, however, exited early after losses to Brazil, Poland, and Japan.
In addition to her national team duties, Wanja also worked part-time as a gym instructor for Kenya Pipeline, her longtime club.
Wanja will be remembered for her indomitable spirit, exceptional talent, and lasting legacy in Kenyan volleyball.
