Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United Challenge: Turning the Club’s Fortune Around

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has stated that it would be “crazy” to consider the team as Premier League contenders for the upcoming season. However, he acknowledges the urgency to turn around the club’s fortunes quickly.

Currently, Manchester United sits in 13th place in the Premier League, with only 22 points from Amorim’s first 19 games. They are trailing leaders Liverpool by a huge 36 points. The Reds are well on track to match United’s record of 20 top-flight titles in English football.

United’s co-owners, Ineos, have set a bold goal to claim a 21st league title by 2028, which marks the club’s 150th anniversary. But Amorim admits the task ahead is daunting, and he must push himself and his team to make substantial improvements next season.

Amorim’s Realistic Goal for Manchester United

Amorim is clear about his priorities and does not expect to win the Premier League next season. “It’s not that next year is our goal. I am not saying we are going to win the title. I am not crazy,” he said. But, he adds, he doesn’t want the conversation to be about waiting years to get things right. “We are in a rush,” he said, emphasizing the urgency for improvement.

    No Patience Like Ferguson’s Era

The pressure on Amorim is already evident. Manchester United’s last Premier League title came in 2013 under the guidance of Sir Alex Ferguson. Ferguson’s reign lasted 27 years, and while he started slowly, he eventually led the team to countless trophies. However, Amorim recognizes that the environment has changed drastically since then.

“It’s not possible nowadays because you have to speak three times and give three interviews before each game,” he explains. The constant media attention on managers has created a much higher level of pressure. He points to his predecessor, Erik ten Hag, who was sacked in October despite winning a trophy in his first two seasons.

Key Wins and the Manchester Derby

One of Amorim’s brightest moments so far was his victory over local rivals Manchester City in December. Now, he has the chance to make history by completing United’s first league double over City since the 2019/2020 season. A win in the upcoming Manchester derby could provide a much-needed boost for the team.

Meanwhile, there is some optimism for United fans as Kobbie Mainoo, who has been out injured for two months, may make his return. However, Matthijs de Ligt is a doubt after suffering an injury in the recent 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest.

    The Road Ahead

With a challenging season still ongoing, Amorim remains focused on improving the team. While he doesn’t expect to challenge for the Premier League title next year, he insists that significant progress must be made in the coming months. For Amorim and Manchester United, the clock is ticking as they aim to return to their former glory.
