Kenyan Politicians Who Faced Major Losses in 2024

The political scene in Kenya was tough and unforgiving in 2024, with many politicians facing career-ending setbacks regardless of their age, status, or political affiliation.

This year, several prominent politicians left the stage, wondering about their next moves after significant changes in the political landscape.

Making the right decisions in politics can either make or break a career. Some made wise choices, while others may regret theirs.

    Rigathi Gachagua

One of the biggest political losers was Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. He made history as the first sitting Deputy President to be impeached.

His removal was swift, with the National Assembly impeaching him, and the Senate upholding the decision. His rapid rise from a first-term MP to Deputy President had many hoping he could one day become President, but his downfall dashed those hopes.

Gachagua has since tried to stay relevant by attending political forums and attacking his former boss, President Ruto. It will be interesting to see what his future holds as he strives to maintain political relevance.

    Susan Nakhumicha

Susan Nakhumicha, the former Cabinet Secretary for Health, also had a challenging year. She faced the worst medical strike in the countryโ€™s history, which drew public criticism over her handling of the health ministry.

The strike, which saw violent clashes with police, was followed by her dismissal after the Gen Z protests. Since leaving office, Nakhumicha has kept a low profile, focusing on farming and expressing interest in running for a political position in Western Kenya. 2025 will reveal whether she can make a political comeback.

    Mithika Linturi

Mithika Linturi, the former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary, also faced major setbacks. His ministry became embroiled in a fertilizer scandal that jeopardized the country’s food security.

Despite surviving an impeachment motion, Linturi’s political career ended when President Ruto dissolved the Cabinet following the Gen Z protests. Linturi regretted his blind loyalty to Ruto, criticizing him for not formalizing their partnership with a written agreement.

    Aisha Jumwa

Aisha Jumwa, the former Cabinet Secretary for Gender, Culture, and Arts, also lost a prominent role in the government and has been out of the spotlight since.

While she maintains strong loyalty to President Ruto, her political influence in the Coast region has waned. Reports suggest that UDA is considering other candidates for the Kilifi gubernatorial race, which Jumwa had once been a frontrunner for. Her future in politics remains uncertain.

    Cleophas Malala

Cleophas Malala, once a rising star in Kenyan politics and UDA’s Secretary General, also suffered a dramatic fall in 2024. His allegiance to Gachagua, whose impeachment led to Malalaโ€™s removal from his position, left him sidelined.

Malala has since become an ordinary political commentator, lamenting his loss of influence and criticizing Ruto. However, he continues to attend local political events, hoping to regain relevance.

The political losers of 2024 show how quickly fortunes can change in politics. For those who fell from grace, it may be time to reevaluate their strategies and rebuild.

Whether their setbacks are temporary or permanent, only time will tell. As the saying goes, “Form is temporary, class is permanent.” Kenyan politicians may find new opportunities in the coming year to rise again and reclaim their political power.
