Family Betrayal: Mathias Pogba Gets Jail Sentence for Extorting Brother Paul Pogba – But Won’t Serve Time

Mathias Pogba, the older brother of former Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba, has been sentenced to a three-year prison term, with two years suspended, for attempting to extort his sibling.

However, Mathias will not spend time in jail. Instead, he will serve a one-year sentence under electronic surveillance. Additionally, he was fined €20,000 (£16,500).

The conviction comes after Mathias and five other individuals were found guilty of extorting Paul Pogba and committing various other offenses.

The Paris court sentenced the other defendants to prison terms ranging from four to eight years.

In 2022, Paul Pogba revealed that he had been held at gunpoint by childhood friends who demanded €13 million (£10.8 million) from him.

He later admitted to paying €100,000 (£82,600) to his captors. He described feeling betrayed, having been tricked by those he once trusted.

Mathias Pogba’s defense lawyer, Mbeko Tabula, expressed dissatisfaction with the court’s ruling, calling the sentence “extremely harsh” and suggesting that they might appeal the decision.

The other defendants were sentenced as follows: Roushdane K was given an eight-year sentence, Boubacar C received a four-year sentence with two years suspended, Adama C was sentenced to five years, Mamadou M was handed five years with 12 months suspended, and Machikour K was sentenced to four years, with three years suspended.

In the wake of the extortion attempt, Paul Pogba shared with Al Jazeera that he had even considered quitting football altogether.

Reflecting on the impact of money on relationships, he said, “When there is money, you have to be careful. Money changes people. It can break up a family. It can create a war.”
