    Kenyan Counties with Zero Spending on Foreign Trips in Q1 2024/25

    A report by the Controller of Budget (CoB), Margaret Nyakang’o, has disclosed that officials in 31 counties did not travel abroad during the first quarter of the 2024/2025 financial year.

    How much did counties allocate for foreign travel?

    The County Governments Budget Implementation Review Report revealed that devolved units spent KSh 97.2 million on foreign travel in the first quarter.

    The report showed that the total county government expenditures for the first quarter of FY 2024/25 amounted to KSh 55.68 billion, reflecting a 10% absorption rate of the KSh 576.73 billion total annual county government budget.

    “Recurrent expenditure was KSh 48.96 billion, representing 13% of the annual recurrent budget, a drop from 18% in Q1 FY 2023/24, where KSh 60.56 billion was spent,” Nyakang’o stated.

    Which counties reported zero expenditure on foreign travel?

    Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet, Embu, Homa Bay, Isiolo, Kajiado, Kericho, Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Kisii, Kitui, Kwale, Lamu, Machakos, Mandera, Marsabit, Meru, Migori, Mombasa, Murang’a, Nyamira, Samburu, Taita Taveta, Tana River, Tharaka Nithi, Trans Nzoia, Turkana, Uasin Gishu, Vihiga, Wajir, and West Pokot.

    Which counties spent the most on MCA allowances?

    Nyakang’o also reported that county governments allocated KSh 290.23 million for MCA sitting allowances in Q1 FY 2024/25.

    This expenditure constitutes 15% of the approved sitting allowance budget of KSh 1.88 billion, down from 16% in Q1 FY 2023/24.

    Samburu County had the highest average sitting allowance per MCA at KSh 223,797, followed by Makueni at KSh 108,902.

    Nairobi City county paid the lowest average sitting allowance per MCA at KSh 4,582, with Kajiado County offering KSh 8,081.

    Counties with the highest number of commercial bank accounts include Nakuru (301), Bungoma (300), and Kiambu (292).
