US House Approves $884 Billion Defense Bill Blocking Gender Care for Minors

US lawmakers have taken a crucial step in advancing a debated 2025 defense budget following intense discussions.

The proposed budget includes a pay raise for military personnel while halting funding for gender-affirming care for some transgender children of service members.

The $884 billion National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), passed by the Republican-majority House of Representatives and awaiting Senate approval, highlights a 14.5% salary increase for junior enlisted members and a 4.5% boost for other personnel.

However, Republican lawmakers added a last-minute provision barring the military’s health program from covering gender-affirming care for children that leads to “sterilization.”

Representative Don Bacon from Nebraska argued that taxpayers oppose funding such procedures, claiming, “Underage individuals often regret these surgeries later in life.”

This healthcare restriction is among several contentious issues fueling the “culture wars” in American politics, with Republicans using it to challenge Democrats ahead of the November elections.

Progressive Democrats expressed strong opposition, with Adam Smith, the House Armed Services Committeeโ€™s top Democrat, labeling the provision discriminatory and harmful to children.

Smith criticized Speaker Mike Johnson for catering to “extreme elements” within the Republican Party and warned the clause could force service members to abandon their military careers to secure essential care for their children.

Despite the controversy, the NDAA passed the House with a 281-140 vote and is poised for Senate deliberation.

The bill, a legislative staple since 1961, exceeds last yearโ€™s defense spending by 1%, bringing the total defense budget close to $900 billion with supplementary funding.

Although some Senate Republicans sought an additional $25 billion for the Pentagon, the bill is expected to gain bipartisan support.

House Speaker Mike Johnson emphasized its significance, stating it ensures the military remains the worldโ€™s most formidable fighting force.
