20 Hospitalised After Bees Storm Burial

A burial ceremony in Huduruma Estate, Mwea, Kirinyaga County, was interrupted on Tuesday, December 10, when a swarm of bees attacked those in attendance.

The strange event unfolded as mourners were lowering the body of a 76-year-old woman into her grave.

A witness who spoke to the press shared that at least 20 people were rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

Another witness described how some victims collapsed while being transported to the hospital, though they received medical attention and are now recovering.

“We had come to support a family member at the funeral, and as we were completing the burial, a swarm of bees attacked us,” one witness recounted.

“Some people ran to the kitchen, others to the bathrooms… everyone scrambled to find shelter, but those who couldnโ€™t escape suffered severe bites,” the witness added.

A doctor from Kirinyaga Hospital confirmed the incident, noting that the victims experienced allergic reactions to the bee stings, but the situation was eventually under control.

Soon after, a rescue team, including Kirinyaga County Firefighters, arrived at the scene, and locals lit a fire to drive the bees away, allowing the burial to continue.

Despite these efforts, the deceased was buried at night by a small group of mourners. Residents expressed that this was a completely unprecedented event.

In a similar incident last November in Nyeri County, motorists had to flee after bees swarmed a matatu terminus. The bees targeted a matatu preparing to depart for Nanyuki.

As passengers boarded the 14-seater vehicle, they noticed a swarm of bees, causing panic among the passengers.

The driver swiftly moved the matatu off the road, hoping the bees would disperse, but to everyoneโ€™s surprise, the bees became more aggressive, stinging several people.
