UDA Calls on Azimio to Drop IEBC Case
The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party has urged Azimio Coalition members to withdraw a lawsuit that is preventing the reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
In a statement clarifying their position, party Secretary General Hassan Omar emphasized that the ruling party was not responsible for the delays in the process.
“There has been an attempt to wrongly assign blame to the Government for the holdup in forming the IEBC, which is far from the truth,” part of the statement noted.
The party explained that the delay stemmed from an injunction issued by the Kiambu Law Courts, which halted the formation of the panel intended to recruit members for the commission.
The statement further clarified that neither UDA nor the government were involved in the court proceedings, asserting that they had adhered to all requirements to facilitate the swift establishment of the IEBC.
“We urge the litigants in the case, who are members of the Azimio coalition, to drop their case so that the process can proceed,” the statement requested.
“We also urge the Judiciary to recognize that the urgent need to form the IEBC far outweighs any concerns from individuals who may be affected by the recruitment panel’s formation.”

To reinforce their commitment to reconstituting the IEBC, UDA highlighted their eagerness to participate in the by-elections in various wards and constituencies that have been vacant for the past two years.
UDA explained that the statement was prompted by recent accusations that the government had intentionally delayed the process.
The issue resurfaced when Supreme Court Judge Isaac Lenaola called on the government to immediately reconstitute the IEBC, leading to a renewed online call by Kenyans to #AppointIEBCNow.
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, whom the government has blamed for the delay due to his involvement in the court case, also responded to the allegations on Sunday.
“On IEBC, we followed the Court’s strict timelines and proposed Koki Muli,” stated Kalonzo Musyoka.
“The government itself filed an appeal with the Kiambu High Court against our decision, seeking candidates who are easier to influence and manipulate. This is part of President Ruto’s strategy to block the IEBC formation.”
As the case involving Kalonzo’s ally Ambassador Koki Muli remains unresolved, the country faces uncertainty until it is heard in January 2025.
