CJ Koome Breaks Silence After Being Pressured to Resign

Chief Justice Martha Koome has responded to some Kenyans calling for her resignation through social media.

During her speech at the 2024 Annual Human Rights Summit in Nairobi on December 10, CJ Koome revealed that she has been subjected to cyberbullying and Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

Addressing the challenges facing Kenya’s Judiciary, the CJ shared how social media posts have been aimed at threatening her and pushing her out of office.

Nevertheless, Koome made it clear that she would not be intimidated, emphasizing her dedication to tackling the critical issues within the Judiciary.

โ€œWe are aware of the cyberbullying and concerns over data privacy. I always admit that I am a victim of cyberbullying or what is referred to as technologically facilitated GBV,โ€ Koome stated.

โ€œI understand that it’s a business strategy, but I donโ€™t know what the aim isโ€”whether itโ€™s to intimidate, destroy, defame, or force me out. But they will need to try another approach,โ€ she added.

To combat the rise in GBV cases, the Chief Justice disclosed that the Judiciary has launched 13 gender justice courts to address gender-related crimes.

She also assured that efforts would be made to establish gender justice courts in all 47 counties.

โ€œWe are attentive to the concerns of Kenyans. We are committed to serving them. As reflected in the discussions today, we have heard what you have shared with us and will act on it,โ€ Koome assured.

Her remarks came shortly after she pledged to reform the judiciary, following criticisms from well-known lawyers such as Senior Counsel Ahmednasir Abdullahi and PLO Lumumba.

On December 9, Koome issued a statement vowing to investigate corrupt Judiciary officials, including judges engaged in illegal activities that undermine the integrity of the courts.

In response to the concerns of the two lawyers, CJ Koome instructed the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) to engage with Ahmednasir Abdullahi and address the issue.

โ€œI have directed the JSC Secretary to assign an investigative team to work with Ahmednasir Abdullahi and gather details of the allegations shared on the social media platform X for further action by the Commission,โ€ Koome directed.
