4 Key Issues Uhuru Urged Ruto to Address in Monday Talks

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday, December 9, clarified details regarding his meeting with President William Ruto.

President Ruto visited Uhuru at his Gatundu home, where the two leaders deliberated on matters of national importance.

In an official statement, Ruto praised Uhuru for his statesmanship in ensuring a peaceful transfer of power, alongside other key topics.

Interestingly, Ruto’s statement emphasized Kenya Kwanza’s government agenda, highlighting areas of alignment with the former President.

Amid speculation about the political implications of their meeting, Uhuru issued his statement on Monday evening, elaborating on issues he raised with the President.

Addressing rumors of political affiliations, Uhuru’s office explained, “It is customary for current and former Presidents to engage and consult on matters of national importance for the benefit of the nation.”

Here are additional issues Uhuru addressed, which Ruto did not directly elaborate on:

    1. Political Animosity
Uhuru disclosed discussing the harassment of individuals perceived as opposing the government. While Ruto mentioned this briefly, Uhuru offered more details on the matter.
    2. Taxation Concerns
The former President highlighted the pressing issue of taxation, echoing the concerns of ordinary Kenyans and proposing potential solutions.
    3. Need for Opposition
Uhuru underscored the importance of a robust opposition to hold the government accountable, emphasizing its role in a healthy democracy.
    4. Transparency and Accountability
Uhuru called on Ruto to prioritize transparency, stating that continuous consultation with practitioners is crucial for effective governance.

Additionally, Uhuru urged Ruto to address growing insecurity across the country.

Both leaders agreed on the urgent reconstitution of the IEBC, a process currently delayed by a court case. They also acknowledged that the struggling economy was partly due to global disruptions that affected supply chains, leading to high costs for essentials like fertilizer and wheat.

Ruto expressed gratitude to Uhuru for laying the groundwork for Kenya Kwanza’s core agenda, including food security, universal healthcare, affordable housing, and MSME empowerment.
