Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has raised concerns over the government’s delay in reconstituting the electoral body and has called on President William Ruto to act swiftly.

Speaking during a Church Service at P.C.E.A Mwiki in Kasarani, Nairobi, on Sunday, December 8, Gachagua criticized his former boss over the lack of a functional electoral commission in the country.

“The credibility of an election depends on the process. The IEBC (Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission) should be in place three years before the election. We now have just two and a half years left, and there’s no IEBC. This delay raises questions,” he remarked.

Gachagua emphasized that the country was falling behind schedule, as the law dictates that the electoral body should be constituted three years before the general election.

He appealed to President Ruto to urgently address the issue, noting the diminishing timeline. “We are urging the immediate reconstitution of IEBC to ensure a credible process and outcome,” Gachagua added.

His remarks followed a widespread online campaign, #appointiebcnow, where Kenyans expressed concerns over what they perceived as deliberate delays by the Kenya Kwanza government in establishing a functional electoral commission.

The campaign has increased pressure on President Ruto, who faces challenges in setting up the IEBC due to pending court cases that block the appointment of a panel to select commissioners until at least January.

During the same church event, Gachagua thanked his allies for holding the Kenya Kwanza government accountable and encouraged the church to continue calling out malpractices within the administration.

This appearance marked Gachagua’s return to the public eye after a week-long absence following a hostile reception at a burial in Limuru, which he described as a “calculated attempt on my life.”
